OSD Update - Musical Minutes April 9th

Good afternoon everyone,

As I am sure some of you have heard, Gov. Brown has cancelled all in-building school for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. We are continuing with packets and distance education, so school is still in-session, but we will not be returning to Oakridge Elementary School and Oakridge Junior/Senior High School until at least the fall.

We just held our district wide meeting, and there are a few things that I can report:
- Meals continue to be served Monday through Friday, available at OJSH, Baptist Church on School Street, and via OSD Bus Routes. Kathy from the Bus Barn drives my route, and she is letting me know that the bus routes are going quickly, so some times will become earlier. My house was set at 11:05am, and they anticipate moving it five minutes earlier.
- All Seniors that were win good standing when school was suspended will receive passing marks for graduation. Study Skills for graduation will not be expected. I cannot comment on Commencement ceremonies. For my Choral Seniors, I will miss your energy and music in class SO MUCH!!!
- There is no clear information on Grades, Jumprope, or GPA to report. OSD is waiting guidance from the State, which means SOMETHING will be decided, but the district does not wish to make plans that need to be changed. We are trying to make this as low stress as possible, and EVERYONE knows that the stress is high.
- I will be calling all of my ADVISORY students on a weekly basis. As only one of them is a Musician, I will also be contacting you Friday to check in on Instruments, Sheet Music, Internet Access, and more. I am sorry if too many teachers call you in the next week, it just shows that your children are cared about and we are trying to help make this a successful experience!
- Music is being offered in multiple manners. We are having packets available for students without instruments, or without internet access. There is a Music Appreciation course AND a Music Theory Course available on the Acellus platform. I will also continue to set up Google Classroom. I have received sic (6) responses from students, and I look forward to more soon!

If you need music supplies, please email me or call me at 541-782-8271!

OSD Update - Musical Minutes April 1st

Well, I have been working on a few “Dumb Jokes of the Day,” and a few great Dad Jokes, but today is not a day of pranks. :(

For those of of you that just got the Automatic Phone call from Sup. Doland, otherwise known as the Robo-Call, I want you to know that it is coming from Arkansas. My phone has called it Spam, but it is important!!  That number is (501) 712-2633.

Today is one of the first days that we have Action to report officially. It has been announced in the last half hour that the Supplemental Packets will begin delivery tomorrow during the lunch bus routes, and the packets continue delivery until Friday. The lunches WILL continue delivery Mondays through Fridays, as well as be available for walk up service at the Baptist Church and OJSH.

All supplemental packets will also be available for pickup at OJSH, not OES. It is my understanding that all packets will be at the one location.

As many of you understand, our district gets guidance from ODE (Oregon Department of Education) which is working with the State and Federal Governments in this trying time. We as teachers cannot make too many announcements until they are made official by our School District. Thank you for your understanding and support!

As normal, Music Students all have access to Google Classroom for their specific courses. Everyone has been sent invitations and either accepted them, or not logged onto their ”ohswarriors” Google accounts. It is only available to them on those accounts, which makes it imperative that they follow directions and login accordingly. If you are having any technical concerns, password issues, and the like, the first step is to email me at mwilson@oakridge.k12.or.us. Please understand that we teachers will do our best to respond in a timely manner.

WIth the additional schedule flexibility that working from home affords me, I will try to set up an office hour for emails, for grading assessments, making telephone calls, recording videos for the worksheets sent out, and conducting any Video Chats.

This is new to you also! It seems we will have flexible times to conduct our business, stress reduction time, meals, and as EVERY teacher loves.... bathroom time! :)

As we transition to curricular work, I want to make sure that every student has access to their instruments, sheet music, and appropriate literature. We may not be a virtual choir, but each of us can still be Musical and Grow!

Desire - Effort - Focus - Growth!!!

OSD Updates - Musical Minutes for St. Patrick's Day

My lovely Student Musicians,

We are in a unique time, and hindsight will be 20/20, but it may not be clear to us during the year 2020.

School has been officially postponed until April 28th. I know many of you do not get your news here first, but I hope this helps a bit.

Musically, this means that the Mountain West Music Festival has been cancelled for April 24th, and most likely will not happen this school year.

As for our potential tour being overnight or a day trip, we may need to put that on hold also. It is too early for myself, or OSD Admin, to tell what will happen to class time, let alone any field trips.

For those of you with your instruments, we will be working on different activities for our current sheet music. With the proliferation of free exercises, and with the publishers hopefully allowing me to adapt our method books for you students, we can come up with different songs to practice that are fun to practice by yourselves. I love chorales, but if we are all practicing Social Distancing, then that may not be the easiest song to play! :)

Stay safe, stay active, and realize that once your thumbs fall off from video games, there are lots of fun things to do during Spring Break 2020... the longest Spring Break in history! There are a lot of musical events streaming and free online. If you know of any that your peers may enjoy, make a post here and let us know! I will be watching a lot of Symphonies, Ballet, and Musicals online.

I am already missing you all! Let me know here, or via email, if you need any help, or a phone call, or a super cool song to practice. Copyright lets me work with 10% of a song, so if you can provide me a source URL, I can try to write it out for you in a key you can play.

I do not have all of the answers. Please stay tuned for more information from the Oakridge School DIstrict via Facebook, their website, Flash Alert, and state information via various news sources. For those of you without the newspaper or internet, there was this cool Streaming Service called the Radio that still works. You may have an alarm clock with AM/FM... and you may find a great radio station with great tunes streaming over the airwaves.

Mr. Wilson's Musical Minutes

I have started a newsletter to go home on Thursdays for the Oakridge Elementary Band that is for the parents and students to go over.

One of the biggest items that is in the Musical Minutes is that I am using Google Classroom to show our assignments, grades, sheet music, and host videos. For students that can, they may record themselves for feedback, and post them on Google Classroom for me to see. They are turned in only to me, so that the rest of the class does not see them. The web address is: classroom.google.com

Students need to use their student number followed by our domain to login: ####@ohswarriors.net

Accessories and Supplies!

3/4/2020

Good afternoon families!

At the school, I have picked up four mouthpiece brushes for Brass Players.
In the future, know that I go to Eugene two times a week, and we have a potential Employee from Beacock's Music named Travis Wong that can bring us materials. If your child is a Trumpet, Trombone, or Baritone player and wishes to buy a brass mouthpiece cleaning brush, please send $3 to class with a note.

I also have one Trombone and one Baritone Book that a student may purchase for $10.50.

In the future, if you wish to get accessories I encourage you to notify Mr. Wilson (me) and the office that you need assistance, or simply go to Eugene to pick them up. I have no problem dropping off or picking up instruments once per week, but am not able to pay for personal repairs. To keep money fair, in the future contact me to see if I am available, and send money to the office for purchases. Once there, we can purchase from Beacock's and send one check in per month.

I am so excited for tomorrow! The extra time has done our Beginning Band, Intermediate Band, and Choir very well!  A few extra songs, a few polished songs, and some great music is ready to happen!

Please arrive at Oakridge Junior/Senior High School by 6:30pm. All students will meet in the High School Music Room for warm ups, and the concert will begin at 7:00pm. The concert will be over by 8:15pm, and our beginners can watch the Combined Intermediate and Concert Bands playing a Song for Friends.
